Abdominal Massage for Constipation

Abdominal Massage for Constipation

What Is Abdominal Massage?

For centuries abdominal massage has been used as a supportive treatment for constipation.

Massaging the belly (abdomen) can help to move stool through your colon and lessen symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating

Various massage techniques may be used. It may be self-directed or performed by another person.

Planning Your Abdominal Massage

Consider the following to enhance the effects of the abdominal massage.

  • Massage your abdomen 1 to 2 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes each time.

  • Massage your abdomen in a clockwise motion, which means from right to left. That is the  same way stool moves through your colon (up the right side, across the top, and down the left side).

  • You can use oil or lotion for the massage.

  • To help promote the movement of stool, drink a hot beverage 30 minutes before you begin.

  • You can make adjustments to the timing of your massage, technique, and amount of pressure you use, based on your comfort level and on what is most effective.

Note:  There isn’t an exact technique for performing abdominal massage. As you read through the following approach and if you’ve looked at other abdominal massage resources, you’ll find that they do have similar concepts.

Self Abdominal Massage Technique

  1. Lie on your back on a firm mattress or the floor with your knees bent, feet flat.

  2. Place your hands, fingers together, on your right pelvic area.

  3. Lightly massage in small circles moving up the right side of your abdomen to your rib cage.

  4. Continue across to your left upper abdomen.

  5. Then lightly massage down the left side of your abdomen to your left pelvic area.

  6. Next massage for a few minutes in a circular motion around your navel.

  7. Continue clockwise from the right side of your pelvis to your upper abdomen, then across your upper abdomen and down the left side towards your pelvis.

  8. Again, massage for a few minutes in a circular motion around your navel.

  9. Spend about 1 minute moving across each area. Continue for 10 to 15 minutes.
